About This Episode
In this episode of EDU Unlocked, host Ashish Fernando sits down with Dr. Arthur Levine, President of Brandeis University, to explore why higher education must evolve, how institutions can overcome resistance to change, and what the future holds for liberal arts education in an AI-driven world.
Drawing on more than five decades of experience in higher education, Dr. Levine reflects on his journey from Brandeis student to university president, his early research on undergraduate education reform, and the lessons he has learned from leading institutions through periods of transformation. He explains why successful institutional change requires more than ambitious ideas. It must align with the values, motivations, and priorities of the people responsible for making it happen.
A central focus of the conversation is the Brandeis Plan, an initiative to reinvent liberal arts education for a global digital knowledge economy. Dr. Levine discusses how Brandeis is redesigning general education around durable competencies such as communication, teamwork, and technological fluency, while expanding opportunities for students to apply classroom learning through internships, simulations, and real-world experiences.
The discussion also explores Brandeis' plans for competency-based transcripts, microcredentials, career advising, and institutional restructuring. Dr. Levine shares how collaboration with faculty helped move these ideas forward, including a faculty vote in which 88% supported the proposed changes.
As the conversation turns to artificial intelligence, Dr. Levine explains how Brandeis is introducing an AI boot camp focused on ethics, values, practical tools, and demonstrated competency. Rather than adopting AI simply because it is a popular technology, he argues that universities should use it to create learning experiences that were previously impossible.
Ashish and Dr. Levine also examine why liberal arts education remains essential in a rapidly changing workforce. From the importance of technological fluency to the need for institutions to distinguish themselves in a competitive higher education market, the conversation offers a practical perspective on preparing students for an uncertain future.
For university presidents, provosts, academic leaders, and higher education administrators, this episode offers valuable insights into institutional transformation, curriculum innovation, faculty engagement, and the role of AI in shaping the future of higher education.
