About This Episode

In this episode of EDU Unlocked, host Ashish Fernando sits down with Dr. Galen Jones, the inaugural Vice Provost for Artificial Intelligence at the University of Minnesota, to explore how higher education can prepare students, employees, and entire communities for an AI-driven future.
Dr. Jones shares the vision behind the University of Minnesota's AI Hub, a university-wide initiative designed to advance AI education, workforce development, research, and public engagement. Rather than treating artificial intelligence as simply another technological advancement, he explains why institutions must build the capacity to understand, evaluate, and shape its impact on society.
The conversation explores why AI literacy is becoming essential for employment, with Dr. Jones sharing insights from companies that increasingly expect entry-level candidates to demonstrate practical AI skills. He also discusses the university's efforts to develop AI training programs for Fortune 500 companies, support K-12 education, and bring together academic institutions, government leaders, and industry partners.
Ashish and Dr. Jones examine the challenges universities face when implementing AI, including institutional resistance, data privacy, leadership alignment, and the difficulty of keeping pace with rapidly evolving technologies. Dr. Jones explains how the University of Minnesota is addressing these challenges through collaboration, trust-building, and a coordinated institutional strategy.
The episode also introduces the university's AI Blueprint initiative, which empowers individual colleges, departments, and programs to develop AI strategies tailored to their disciplines. From university-wide AI literacy training to workforce upskilling and partnerships with industry leaders, Dr. Jones outlines how higher education can take a more proactive role in preparing society for technological change.
For university presidents, CIOs, academic leaders, workforce development professionals, and educators, this episode offers practical perspectives on AI adoption in higher education, building institutional AI strategies, and preparing graduates for a changing job market.
